Thank you so much for this. I commented on the original article, then got harassed by Dr. Offit’s guard dogs that the antivaxxers are lying and you CAN sue vaccine makers for injury. And that autism starts in the womb, so it’s easy to prove all parents who know vaccines damaged their kids are lying. Oh, and my favorite, that the Dr. Offits of the world care more for our kids than we do. Lovely. 🙄

Offit's double-speak is wearing thin. Like "Anti-vaxxer". Their tropes lose their power when they stretch them beyond the point of breaking. Aaron Siri has the very basic, elementary aspect of the concept of EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL while Offit does not. I am deeply concerned, and amazed, quite frankly, that he holds such sway and influence over the way people think about vaccines and vaccine safety, in particular. This exchange should be required reading for anyone doing medical research of any kind, everywhere.
Offit should read "Turtles All The Way Down: Vaccine Science & Myths". I highly recommend this detailed book regarding how vaccines were approved based on the faulty approval of the ones used as the "placebo" for the next one. Be sure to type in the entire title because if you just type in the first part you'll get another "Turtles All the Way down" even using DuckDuckGo. So, clearly it is being hidden from traditional searches.
There are only two possible explanations for Mr. Offit's badly-reasoned article. (1) he's caught in a faith-based cult or (2) he's a leader of the cult. In either case, Mr. Siri's replies are not going to help Mr. Offit; they are for us to spread around and help other people with.
Sadly, proof is only useful to those who are willing to read. It means precious little to those who merely want their particular bias to be reinforced.
Can't say how much I appreciate this, Mr. Siri. Your work is invaluable. Please keep going, knowing that many many people are depending on your - and others' - courageous work.
